What exactly does it mean to deck the halls? I understand that it has something to do with decorating, but I've never heard the word "deck" used that way in any other context. Usually, it means a little area that's outside that's raised above the ground, or to punch someone hard and fast. Why are we punching the halls? Doesn't that hurt them? There are so many old-fashioned holiday phrases that have stuck around because we haven't had the space or time to question them.
We only really start talking about "boughs" this time of year. We never really say "gay apparel" in any other season, unless perhaps we're discussing our Pride Month outfits. And we certainly aren't picking up any "sugar plums" from the local grocery store… really ever. To my knowledge, they only exist in the context of that story. But we take it all in stride because well, 'tis the season. At least we have memes that will always make sense.
