The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) is making significant progress in raising awareness about the risks of youth gambling.
They have announced a record 74 lotteries and 101 community organizations have committed to participating in the 2024 Gift Responsibly Campaign. Supported by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries, the campaign aims to educate the public on the dangers of giving lottery tickets to children.
Major U.S. lotteries such as the California State Lottery, New Jersey Lottery, and Hoosier Lottery, along with regulators like the New York State Gaming Commission, are also taking part in the campaign.
Keith Whyte, the NCPG Executive Director, mentioned:
In December, participating organizations will provide resources to help educate communities about the dangers of giving lottery tickets to children, the risks associated with youth gambling, and how to practice responsible gambling for legal bettors. The campaign will also utilize social media, public service announcements, and digital advertising to amplify the message, while retailer training and in-store signage will promote awareness about the issue of youth gambling.
This year’s initiative marks the seventh consecutive campaign from the NCPG, with 19 international lotteries lending their support, including Loterija Slovenije, Sask Lotteries, Austrian Lotteries, and Loto-Québec.
Earlier this year, the NCPG published a report, which analyzed how well regulated markets align with legal and regulatory frameworks. The report revealed that 11 states did not meet 25 of the Internet Responsible Gambling Standards (IRGS), which offer guidelines for gaming-related policy, training, and research. These standards include 82 player protection criteria that regulated states are expected to follow to ensure safer gambling practices.

This year’s record participation is a heartwarming way to enter the holiday season as we continue our work to educate the public about the dangers of underage gambling.
